Children and Youth
Children should be nurtured. For many, however, growing up is stressful and brings with it emotional and behavioral problems. In some cases, safety, physical or mental health concerns will require outside help.
Crisis Assessment and Referral Services
Our intake team is staffed with licensed mental health professionals ready to listen and assess a youth's situation. They are highly skilled in assessing crisis and
responding appropriately. Our specialized staff also provides compassionate support to the families involved. Because we know crisis can happen at any time, day or night, our Assessment and Referral Staff is available 24 hours a day.
If a youth is at risk of harming themselves or others, one of Parkside's psychiatrists will provide an admission order. Parkside's 16-bed adolescent hospital unit is for youth 10 to 17, and the focus is on safety and stabilization. Patients benefit from physician directed care; intensive daily structure including a token system; individualized treatment plans; psychosocial rehabilitation, and individual and group therapies. Family therapy, for youth who have families, is required and critical to positive treatment outcomes. School is provided on-site, and structured physical and recreational activities are part of each child's treatment.
Youth with chemical dependency diagnosis might require medical detoxification. They will receive a custom designed treatment plan that addresses thoughts, feelings, and behaviors contributing to addiction. They will also develop and implement a personal recovery and relapse prevention plan. Medications may be used as a supportive therapy.
Youth between 6 and 17 years of age who need ongoing and extensive support may receive care at Parkside's residential care facility. Boys and girls suffering with depression, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, trauma, and behavioral problems learn skills designed to help them respond to life's challenges in a healthier manner. Participation in expressive therapy groups encourages the development of social skills. Family therapy, for youth who have families, is required, and is critical to positive treatment outcomes. Our Youth Outpatient Program serves children and adolescents who are struggling to cope. Youth receive the help they need while continuing their daily lives. Some youth might require physician-directed medication management. Our outpatient therapists are licensed, Master's level professionals who help patients through individual, family, and group therapies. The program also includes three licensed alcohol and drug counselors to help patients with chemical dependency issues.
